Marine innovation in Bergen

Fiskeriforskning organised a "Biomarine Industrial Seminar" in Bergen on 6-7 December. The annual seminar has become an attractive meeting place for industrial companies and the R&D communities.

This year's seminar focused on marine innovation with a basis in technology, new ingredients and feeds.

Invited lecturers presented new technology for production of marine ingredients, and there were contributions about industrial experience with Antarctic krill and challenges with use of marine oils in foodstuffs.

GEA Niro presented so-called "freeze concentration", a new technology used to produce high-quality extracts (concentrates) without loss of taste components. Hosokawa presented news within freeze-drying to produce high-quality dry powder for use in foodstuffs and health foods. The new freeze-drying method is more effective than traditional methods.

From Fiskeriforskning, we learned about news within feed for crustaceans, feed for cod, feed technology, increased utilisation of marine raw materials with use of biotechnology, and technology for removing persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Fiskeriforskning has developed dry feed for sea urchins and King crab, where the interaction between technology and choice of ingredients has been crucial. This was also among the lecture themes.

The target group for the seminary is the fishmeal industry, feed manufacturers, the marine ingredients industry and equipment vendors. 114 participants attended this year's seminar.
