New cleaning method causes fewer environmental toxins

Fiskeriforskning is developing a new method for removing dioxin and PCA from fishmeal.

Stricter requirements from the EU during 2004 for allowable levels of environmental toxin in fishmeal and fish oil make it necessary to develop better cleaning methods in the industry.

The new process costs less and is equally effective as the process used today. The method also makes it possible to produce a clean fishmeal with an unchanged level of fat, thus retaining important polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Fiskeriforskning is also working with new technology for removing other relevant environmental toxins such as bromated flame retardants and the heavy metal arsenic.

The project is being conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) and the Norwegian Seafood Association (FHL).
