Trimmings can create industry

Fiskeriforskning and Industrial Technology Institute in Sri Lanka are charting the possibilities for utilisation of the by-products from the country's fishing industry.

There are large quantities of by-products from fish and shellfish, e.g. heads, intestines, skin, scales and bones. These by-products can be used in several ways, including for food, health food and pharmaceutics.

The goal is that the industry in Sri Lanka will be better able utilise these resources, and that a way for collaboration be opened with Norwegian competence and industry within fishing and aquaculture. The first phase will include a five-month pre-project for charting the raw material basis, product possibilities, economy and the competition situation.

During the second phase, industrial companies in Norway and Sri Lanka will be invited to collaborate for mutual commercial production of relevant products.

The pre-project is financed by NORAD.
