Uniting around charr

A European network for charr enthusiasts has been established with its own web pages. Fiskeriforskning has participated in the work by collecting information about Arctic charr.

Central in the organisation of the charr network has been the creation of an Internet portal. The website contains hundreds of pages with information about Arctic charr in Europe, and is made for everyone who is interested in the species, from scientists and producers to chefs and sports fishermen.

Free membership in the network provides access to a wide range of documents with tips and advice about, for example, ice fishing and production of fry.

"It used to be difficult to orient oneself in the different channels that provide information about charr. We have now gathered a large amount of information in one place", says Scientist Bjørn Steinar Sæther at Fiskeriforskning.

He has been heavily involved in the work along with other resource persons from Scandinavia, Great Britain, France and Austria. The plan is to continue developing the network portal in the coming years.

In addition to gathering information, the European charr network has held annual meetings where the focus has been on themes such as aquaculture, biology and management of wild charr. The network has also led to increased exchanges of ideas and contact between breeders, research and management in the various member countries.

The three-year project "Charrnet European network supporting infrastructures for Arctic charr culture and conservation" is financed by the EU.
