The Icelanders regard heads as a resource and earn a great deal of money on industrially dried heads exported to Nigeria. The heads are considered an important part of the diet of the average Nigerian who cannot afford to buy ordinary stockfish.
Scientists at Fiskeriforskning have researched whether it would be possible to establish a similar process in Norway. The conclusion reached is that such a production can be economically interesting, but the energy costs would be important.
To ensure a profitable production, one must have a good raw material base, produce the quality and product assortment the market wants, keep the production costs low and maintain the willingness to pay in the Nigerian market.
