Workshop

How to incorporate international research into the Norwegian meat industry?

Facts

Start 10. February 2009

Nofima Mat, together with the Federation of Norwegian Food and Drink Industry, is organising a workshop on 10 February 2009 to look into the following issues:

  • What research is currently going on into designing future production of safe and inexpensive meat products (2020)?
  • How can R&D help with relevant knowledge and the implementation of efficient methods?
  • How can the knowledge base now being developed in national and international projects (especially EU projects) be effectively incorporated into this work?

These are uncertain times for the international meat market; the need for new technological solutions to rationalise operations throughout the value chain is constantly increasing. In Europe major research projects have recently been initiated to assist meat companies in their ongoing development at this difficult time. The general idea of the projects is to help improve innovation and productivity through R&D - in close collaboration with companies and interested parties from the meat industry.
The ProSafeBeef consortium includes 41 research organisations and will develop new knowledge, technology and products in the beef sector. This major project has a gross budget of about €20 million over 5 years. The key themes of the project are related to the safe and secure supply of beef products of high quality and nutritional value with an emphasis on developing new products and processes. An important aspect of the project is to disseminate information in an effective way and to demonstrate the use of the results.

As well as informing about provisional results from ProSafeBeef, the workshop will also go into the status of national projects in heredity and genetics, food and the environment, tracking in processes and on-line analysis of meat.
