Feeding our food

430 scientists are now heading for Norway for the International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding, entitled “Feeding our food”. Through four days, 340 of them will present the most exciting research globally in the field.

The International Symposium on Fish Nutrition and Feeding (ISFNF) takes place in the town of Molde in Norway 4-7 June.

The theme of the meeting, “Feeding our food”, is timely, as sustainability and responsibility are topics of growing interest throughout society. Ronald Hardy, head of the international scientific committee, says:

"From the perspective of fish nutrition, the search for alternative resources for aquafeeds and for more creative ways to combine feed resources are key scientific and, increasingly, social issues. This may ultimately make the difference between success and failure of the industry".

The four invited speakers have much knowledge to offer in this respect, with their following themes of presentations:

  • Dr. Stéphane Panserat, INRA: Nutrient-gene interactions in fish
  • Dr. Gert Flik, Radboud University: Nutrition and endocrinology
  • Dr. Stephen M. Secor, University of Alabama: Adaptive strategies of the gastrointestinal tract to fasting and feeding
  • Dr. Karin Pröll, Upper Austrian University of Applied Science: Machine learning approaches for the analysis of biological data

Torbjørn Åsgård of Nofima is the head of the local organizing committee for ISFNF 2012.

Åsgård is expecting a conference of high scientific standard that deals with a wide range of species. All large and many smaller aquaculture nations will be represented, spreading over all continents of the world.

The conference is being hosted by Nofima along with the Aquaculture Protein Centre (APC), the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES), the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NVH) and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB).
