This project is the second phase in the work to involve industry in Norway and Sri Lanka in production of products from cuttings from the fish industry. Phase I gave a survey of raw material available from the fishing harbours, and from the fish and shrimp processing industry.
The project was started to minimize post harvest losses and to add value to fish products. Further, the present project will improve the environment by improving water quality at the fish harbours by more systematic and proper handling of the fish and by-products, and to take care of the products from processing at the fish and shrimp processing plants. A stakeholder meeting in Colombo revealed a great interest to follow up some of the product idea suggested in phase I. This project proposal is a following up with industries in Sri Lanka and Norway.
By-products from the fish industry represent a potential unutilised raw material in countries where NORAD is involved. Experience from this project may therefore be useful also for commercialisation of this raw material also in other developing countries.
