Project

REPROduction protocols and molecular tools for mass spawning and communal rearing based SELective breeding schemes applied to multiple spawning marine fish

REPROSEL

Facts

Start 15. October 2010
End 15. October 2012
Funded by EU - FP7
In collaboration Spallanzani Institute (Italy), IRTA, Tinamenor S.A., Galaxidi Marine Farms A.E. and Cultivos Piscicolas Marinos S.A. (all Spain), and Ardag Ltd (Israel).

European seabass and gilthead seabream are multiple-spawning species. This puts a limitation to the development of traditional family-based breeding programs, as these need high control of the reproduction.

This project will:

  • help to understand the spawning kinetics and propose hormonal therapies to develop mass spawning protocols allowing equalised parental contribution
  • develop highly informative STRs multiplexes and SNPs microchips and optimise allocation software to maximise the rate of single match at the lower cost
  • optimise selection programs adapted to new mating designs to get the best genetic response while controlling the rate of inbreeding

Nofima will mainly work on the optimisation of selective breeding programs.
