Project

Test effectiveness of ROV for collection of sea urchins and scallops

Facts

Start 25. November 2011
End 15. March 2012
In collaboration Norway Sea Urchin, Sperre AS, Technology AS

Determine the cost-effectiveness harvesting sea urchins and scallops

For sea urchins;

  1. Determine whether the ROV can operate cost-effective harvesting of sea urchins through the winter to supplement the market demand for a highly valued niche product.
  2. Examine whether it can be used to decrease urchin densities in areas where population of sea urchins graze on the sea floor and damage the environment.

For the scallops;

Scallops and Stephane Kjell is a great resource along the western coast, Trøndelag and North Norway. This resource is utilized today in a small degree when harvesting methods used (diving for scallops and scraping for scallops) sets clear limits to harvest quantity, safety and efficiency. More efficient harvesting methods will be able to create more activity with the increase of jobs and export values, and that the safety of those carrying the catch can be improved.
