In vitro and in vivo studies

Measuring the health effects of diet often takes a long term perspective. Nofima has built a cell laboratory in which we can check the effect of various bioactive components from food (such as antioxidants, carbohydrates, bacteria and fats) directly on human cells.

By moving the research to cell level we can directly measure the basic reasons behind the health effects. We gain an increased understanding of the small changes at cell level that can have a visible effect on our health in the longer term. Research on cells therefore gives us the advantage of being able to measure potential health effects rapidly and we can more easily find out which bioactive components in food give the greatest health effects and why.
