Descriptive testing

In a descriptive test we can seek out the properties that are relevant to describe the product.

The properties are measured for intensity, so that we obtain objective information about the products and the variations between them. We can focus on many properties of a product or we can limit ourselves to, for example, just a smell or texture profile.

Descriptive testing can be used for:

  • Product development
  • Changes in production conditions and profiles
  • Optimising formulae/ingredients
  • Storage trials
  • Benchmarking - comparing sensory profile with the competitor's product profile
