Nutrients

The speed of growth of farmed salmon and rainbow trout is steadily increasing owing to progress with breeding, nutrition and project management. Given the increased speed of growth, we need to steadily review the fish’s needs for the various nutrients.

The fish's food needs may be defined as a combination of the nutrients and energy that provide optimal performance, growth, health and welfare. An optimal nutritional status will be visible through a high growth rate, lack of symptoms of nutrient deficiency and an end product of optimal quality.

A good feed must supply the fish the correct amounts of all the necessary nutrients. Nofima is working continually to enhance knowledge about the requirement for each nutrient at the various development stages of each of the farmed fish species.

Macronutrients

Nofima use cells in studies of fat metabolism.

Protein, fat and carbohydrates are the most important ingredients in fish feed and constitute 80-90 percent of the total dry matter in the feed. These nutrients also provide energy released through metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrates, which the fish may use for energy-consuming processes such as developing molecules, growth and activity.

Micronutrients

Micronutrients are nutrients that are necessary only in microscopic quantities, such as vitamins, minerals and carotenoids, which are necessary in order for salmonids to get the red filet colour. A lack of vitamins manifests itself in different deficiency diseases and symptoms.
