Feed for marine larvae and shellfish

Nofima has researched the development of feed for marine larvae for more than a decade.

Nofima Ingrediens in Bergen has achieved a breakthrough in weaning to and use of formulated feed for marine larvae from very early stages.

The salmon feed is produced using agglomeration technology and specially selected ingredients for each particular species.

The binding agent that holds the feed particles together in the tiny feed particles is of marine origin and is specially developed for larvae feed.

Considerable research efforts have been made to optimise the physical properties of ingredients and feed particles. New state-of-the-art technology is used to ensure that all ingredients are present in all feed particles.

The feed particles have a soft consistency. This, combined with the fact that the particles are formed as round balls without sharp edges, ensures easy feed intake for the tiny larvae.

The physical properties mean that the feed is not only simple to consume, but also simple to digest and absorb in the larvae's largely undeveloped digestive systems.

Start feeding of new species such as cod, freshwater cod, halibut, sole and European whitefish based on this type of feed can easily occur from an early stage and with good results.
