Today, no medicines exist that can kill HIV such that one can be rid of the infection. The solution is medicines that keep the infection in check.
But there is a constant need for new and improved versions of these kinds of medicines.
"Molecules from marine animals can contribute in this area", says Senior Scientist Inge W. Nilsen at Fiskeriforskning.
On NRK's Schrødingers katt, he tells how the work is progressing.
The research that is going on at Fiskeriforskning builds on the Institute's efforts through several years to utilise certain characteristics of organisms in the Northern sea regions.
New products
This type of research is also referred to as marine bioprospecting - searching in the sea for biological components that have special functions.
Amongst other things, Fiskeriforskning's research has led to the development of two enzyme products based on shrimp. Today, the enzymes are produced by the company Biotec Pharmacon, and are used by laboratories throughout the world in their work with gene technology.
The feature is being shown on Schrødinger's katt, channel NRK1, Thursday, 22 March at 7:30 pm. Here is a link to the story on NRK's website (in Norwegian only).
