More research on seafood and health

A new research programme within seafood and health is now being established in Tromsø. The efforts will contribute to prevention of lifestyle diseases.

Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are examples of health problems that are largely a result of diet and lifestyle, and which are steadily increasing in scope.

The new research programme will contribute with knowledge about the positive effects of seafood on health.

Research institutes at the University of Tromsø and Fiskeriforskning are now joining together in this work.

Concrete results

"There is already a great deal of research around seafood and health in Tromsø. Amongst other things, these new efforts will result in an even better coordination amongst these institutes", says Managing Director Ivan C. Burkow at Fiskeriforskning.

"This will increase the effect of today's research. The research will also help to find concrete results that can be used in industry and commerce, and development of a seafood industry that is more research-based."

Three scientists will be employed at Fiskeriforskning in research fellow positions within seafood and health. Troms County Council District is contributing with 3 million of the 9 million NOK that are being used on the positions.

From the University of Tromsø, the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, the Institute of Medical Biology and Institute of Community Medicine are participating. Fiskeriforskning will coordinate and lead the work.
