I work in the area of QTL mapping, molecular marker development and marker-assisted selection in a number of aquaculture species. I undertook my PhD in Australia in the area of microsatellite marker development and QTL mapping in abalone, before moving to Norway in 2006. Dramatic advances in DNA sequencing and genotyping technology mean that we now have very powerful tools for identifying markers and genes underlying important commercial traits. I am involved in the use of such technology to try to improve selection for disease resistance in species including Atlantic salmon, cod, rohu carp, and black tiger shrimp. In addition, I work with the large scale development of genetic markers in species with limited resources, and am investigating ways mapping QTL more efficiently (for example using selective DNA pooling) so that the industry can implement and benefit from these tools sooner.
