VIS/NIR Spectroscopy

Visible spectroscopy (VIS) / Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is a rapid instrumental method for on-line applications to quantify properties in food.

The technique is based on measuring how much light is absorbed in the sample at different wavelengths, and then uses this information to provide details about, for instance, chemical composition. Several chemical parameters may be estimated from the same measurement.

At Nofima Marin, measuring devices and methods based on spectroscopy have been developed for several applications, including freshness, bone content in fresh and smoked fillet and determining whether a fish has previously been frozen.
