New ways to fish

Steadier fishing with stable access to fish throughout the year can create greater values of the raw material.

Today, large numbers of fish are landed in short periods, which makes it difficult to have a constant supply of fresh fish in the markets. Fiskeriforskning is therefore underway with a pre-project that will show the consequences of changing the quota year, which currently follows the calendar year.

- By starting the quota year on 1 September, the industry can have steadier access to raw materials. On the other side, this can result in greater costs for the fishing fleet. Thus, there are both advantages and disadvantages with an adjustment, and the pre-project will therefore point out current problems that require further work in connection with a change of the quota year, says Scientist Stein Arne Rånes.

The project is financed by the Fishery and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund and the Norwegian Raw Fish Organisation.
