Traceability in the stockfish industry

Practical challenges of implementing traceability in the stockfish industry

Facts

Start 21. January 2009
End 30. September 2009
Commissioner The Fishery and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund
In collaboration Two stockfish producers

From the 1 January 2010 there will be new requirements form the EU which will affect all exporters of fish to the EU.

These new regulations will amongst other things require a catch certificate, which will document the origins of each delivery of fish which is exported to the EU. If a delivery of fish does not have this documentation after the 1 January 2010 then the fish may be stopped at the boarder. This is a new challenge for the stock fish producers in Norway.

In this project we wish to;

  • Map what are the national and international requirements in relation to tracing and tracking of stock fish.
  • Consider what the new demands will mean for stockfish producers.
  • Suggest what stockfish producers can do in order to meet the coming requirements.
  • Solutions for implementation of traceability in stock fish production will be tested at two stockfish producers. In addition a cost benefit analysis will be carried out before and after implementation of traceability at the two companies.
