Environment and ethics

Food production involves teaming up with nature.

This applies particularly to the industries based on harvesting wild fish stocks.

The major challenge is balancing the fishing fleet's catch capacity and what the stocks tolerate. Today, a host of the commercial important fish stocks are over fished.

The disciple of economics plays an important role in explaining this, and to develop regulating tools to assist with building up and managing stocks in accordance with principles of sustainability.

Consequently, at Nofima Marked we work at length to acquire knowledge to improve the regulation systems for wild stocks and stocks of commercial interest, such that they can be harvested effectively within the principles of sustainability.

Energy

Food production is energy-consuming, which has been highlighted by the increase in energy prices.

At Nofima Marked, we are working to acquire knowledge about which different driving forces influence energy consumption in food production.

We have placed particular weight on understanding how the choice of strategies for catch, production and technology choice influence the energy consumption and environmental strain.

This knowledge is utilised both in management and so that companies can make strategic choices to reduce energy consumption and strain on the environment.

Consumers are also occupied with making environmental considerations.

Nofima Marked emphasises the acquiring of knowledge about how companies can produce in line with customer requirements and desires. We are also working on solutions about how information about how the environment is looked after can be conveyed to the consumers.
