How to get rid of salmonella in animal feed

Salmonella has become established in some feed factories and has remained there for several years, despite attempts to eradicate it. For her doctorate, Lene Katrine Vestby has studied why it is so difficult to get rid of salmonella.

Lene Vestby of the National Veterinary Institute presented her PhD thesis "Biofilm formation by Salmonella from the Norwegian feed industry - with attention to potential persistence and eradication" at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science on 5 November. This is the result of a successful collaboration on salmonella and biofilm between the National Veterinary Institute and Nofima Mat.

Vestby has been part of the research project "Properties of Salmonella in Factories", financed by the Norwegian feed industry and the Research Council of Norway, in which the National Veterinary Institute and Nofima Mat have been research partners.

The project has demonstrated that the creation of biofilm by Salmonella is important for its ability to establish itself in feed factories and that certain disinfectants are effective against Salmonella in biofilm.

The collaboration between Nofima Mat and the National Veterinary Institute is continuing in the new research project "Modern combating of Salmonella", in which the University of Oslo will also be a research partner. The project is being financed by the Norwegian feed industry and the Research Council of Norway during the period 2009 to 2013.
