Strategic research programme
There are always many factors that affect a food product and every product also has many qualities that are important to the consumer. This means that one must always take the multivariate aspect seriously in order to exploit data to the fullest.
Exploiting the opportunities
This programme will focus on the development of statistical and mathematical methods of resolving the ever increasing challenges involved in multivariate issues. The aim is to be at the forefront of development, so that we are always ready to exploit the opportunities created by new, innovative and more powerful measurement techniques. This may be by linking information about genetics with quality, control of production processes, consumer perception and health effects.
Only connect
This programme will focus particularly on methods of studying many sets of measurements at once, so-called multi matrix methods. One of the greatest challenges created by modern research and development is that the really useful insights come from the interconnections between many types of data.
New methods
This creates an urgent need for developing new methods to
- study the interaction between several sets of data
- find common basic structure in data sets
- use several sources for predicting and controlling processes
This type of study will also include developing better techniques for presenting results, which is vital for effective communication between user and data analyst.
Applications
The methods being developed may typically be used to
- improve utilisation of raw materials
- reduce wastage
- reduce variations in a production process
- make production more sustainable'
- improve methods for efficient product development, of food for better health for example
The programme will work closely with several of the other research programmes at Nofima Mat and acquire the data that will provide opportunities and challenges in developing methodology from the practical problems that we are already working on.
