Project

BioTracer

Facts

Start 1. January 2007
End 31. December 2010
Commissioner EU
In collaboration 47 different institutions and companies from 24 different countries. Nofima Mat is the only participant from Norway. The other countries are Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Austria in Europe, as well as Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa.

The aim of the project is to improve the biological traceability of undesirable micro-organisms and their substances in the food and feed chains.

Increased fear of bioterrorism

Such undesirable organisms may be the result of accident or that someone has placed them in the food deliberately, as with bioterrorism - which the population is becoming more and more concerned about. The project addresses both chemical and biological causes and the participants are expert in a number of different technical areas, such as database development, software, risk assessment and microbiology. They are focusing on meat, dairy products, animal feed and bottled water.

Nofima Mat is contributing DNA based methods for separating living and dead bacteria. The project specific studies will concern the survival of Campylobacter in chicken and the survival of microbial communities in milk in the context of pasteurisation.
