Project

Quality for barley and oats

Facts

Start 1. January 2009
End 31. December 2012
Funded by Research funds from the Agricultural Agreement

"Quality for barley and oats" is the short name for the project whose full title is "Polysaccharides in barley and oats - adaptation of production for food and animal feed".

Industrial participants in the project include Norgesmøllene, Lantmännen Cerealia, FK Fôrutvikling (The Norwegian Agricultural Purchasing and Marketing Co-operation's joint venture for the development of feed products for livestock), Graminor, Unikorn/Norgesfôr and Ottadalen Mølle.

Research in recent years has shown that barley and oats have nutritional benefits when used in both in food for humans and in animal feed. In order to increase the use of these cereals in Norway and in order to broaden our knowledge of feed quality, more research is needed. This is particularly relevant for the quality of fibres and starch in barley and oats grown in different climates. In addition, it's important to map which effects future climate changes will have on the quality of fibres and starch. This project will go over four years and aims to provide the cereals industry with increased know-how of how cereal types, climate conditions and processing methods can affect the quality of starch and fibres in barley and oats.

The main aims of the project include:
1) Documenting the effects of genetic and climatic parameters on the quality of starch and fibres in raw materials,
2) Determining the importance of various types of processing methods on starch and fibre quality, and
3) Implementing expertise in nutritional and technological quality-related properties of barley and oats in the value chain.

Climatic effect will be studied in controlled conditions in climate chambers and plastic tunnels, as well as field experiments in various climatic regions... Quality analyses of beta-glucane and fibres, baking experiments, digestive experiments and feed experiments with pork will be carried out at Nofima Mat, the Institute of Food Research (IFR) in Norwich, England and at the Departments of Plant and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences at the University of Life Sciences (UMB).

The project is managed by Bioforsk Øst Apelsvoll in close cooperation with the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences at the University of Life Sciences (UMB) and Nofima Mat.
