The SmartTag fish telemetry system was developed by Nofima Marin and their sub-contractor Thelma Biotel. The SmartTag is an electronic fish tag which measures whether individual free-swimming fish breath normally or if they are stressed.

The information from several SmartTagged fish (so-called "canary-fish") is transmitted wirelessly by means of ultrasound, picked up by a receiver, and processed, displayed and stored on a computer. As such, the SmartTag physiological telemetry system enable on-line monitoring of stress level in individual fish, representing an operational tool as a fish welfare indicator and an early warning system.

Through recent funding from the Fishery and Aquaculture Industry Research Fund (FHF) and the Norwegian Research Council, a new digital version of the SmartTag system is being developed and tested.

Scientific collaborators include Institute of Marine Research (WelfareMeter Expert System) and Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology (FEEDTAG project) and others.
